Maramataka 2026 - 2027
Front Cover of Maramataka
He Mihi
The images in this Maramataka (calendar) are of our native rākau (trees). I’m always looking for a different perspective (in trees and in life), capturing a tree’s essence is my goal. My hope is that these images create an emotional connection and invite you to see our rākau through a different lens. And as an artist, I use many of these rākau for colour in my art.
All of the photographs were taken while wandering and wondering through Aotearoa's native forest spaces and my own garden. Placing them within a Maramataka that begins at Matariki - Puanga, the Māori new year, and using kupu Māori (Māori words) is a small step towards recalibrating our relationship with time and a Māori worldview.
This Maramataka is not one that shares moon phases, but rather an introduction to a new (old) way of marking time and connecting with rākau. You will find kupu for the trees, months and days that I have come to know through my own learning and growing. Other names and dialects exist throughout Aotearoa, and I encourage you to explore those too. There is space here to write in the moon phases from your perspective, where you are located and your own experiences and observations.
Maramataka has front cover and back and 12 images above each month. Sample pages shown below.
Size is A3 open to hang on the wall or A4 closed.
